Car loans, leasing, depreciation, and ownership cost calculators
Car finance calculators help buyers, lessees, and owners understand the true cost of vehicle ownership. Whether you are negotiating a loan at the dealership, comparing a lease to a purchase, or estimating total cost of ownership over five years, these tools cut through the complexity.
A car loan payment depends on four variables: principal (vehicle price minus down payment and trade-in), interest rate (APR), loan term, and any fees rolled in. The monthly payment formula is P x (r(1+r)^n) / ((1+r)^n - 1), where r is monthly rate and n is number of payments. Small differences in APR have a large effect over 60-72 month terms.
Leasing adds residual value and money factor (equivalent APR / 2400) to the calculation. The monthly lease payment covers depreciation (cap cost minus residual) plus finance charge, plus taxes and fees. Gap insurance, registration fees, sales tax, and depreciation curves vary by state and vehicle type.
