Towing & Payload
Towing capacity, payload, tongue weight, and trailer calculators
Towing and payload calculators help truck and SUV owners understand the weight limits of their vehicles and trailers. Exceeding towing or payload capacity is dangerous and can result in loss of control, trailer sway, brake failure, and structural damage.
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) is the maximum loaded weight of the vehicle itself. Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) is the maximum combined weight of the tow vehicle and trailer. Payload capacity = GVWR minus curb weight. Towing capacity = GCWR minus the vehicle's curb weight. Both numbers are found on the door jamb sticker.
Tongue weight should be 10-15% of total trailer weight. Too light causes trailer sway; too heavy overloads the hitch and reduces front axle traction. Trailer load balance is critical - 60% of trailer weight should be forward of the axle centerline. Hitch ball size (1-7/8", 2", 2-5/16") must match the trailer coupler exactly.
